Security tokens

Organisations of all sizes are opening up their information resources to remote access, and administrators need up to date security solutions they can trust.

Brown’s uses strong user authentication to control access to the central network and prevent unauthorised users from gaining access.  Remote users gain access to the system with a security token such as a two-factor time-based password token or a Smart Card.

Two-factor time-based password tokens

Two-factor authentication requires two independent ways to establish identity and privileges.  This contrasts with traditional password authentication, which requires only knowledge of the password to gain access to the system.

The problem with single password authentication is that passwords are the weakest link after users in the access credentials security chain.  This leaves users vulnerable to phishing scams and identity theft.

In the United States this has prompted the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) to state that single-factor authentication such as passwords provide inadequate protection.

In addition, various other regulatory and legal requirements, such as Sarbanes-Oxley, have also mandated some form of two-factor authentication.

In particular, financial institutions benefit from two-factor authentication because it protects customers and reduces losses resulting from identity theft.

Smart cards

Smart Cards provide a safe place to store valuable information such as private keys, account numbers, passwords or personal information.  They are also a secure place to store processes such as performing a public key or private key encryption.

Smart cards provide strong user authentication for a range of security solutions, including logging on over a network, secure Web communication, and secure e-mail.  In addition, they enable verification of PIN or fingerprint securely, offline.
